The 2nd quarter market research report conducted by Infodesk shows that Baidu has strengthened its leadership by holding a share of more than 70% in Great China search market. While Google, the international search giant, has declined its share from 31% to 24% by closing its search business in Mainland China and moving it to Hong Kong to protest China’s censorship on Internet.

China has world’s largest online market by population. By holding a firmly leadership postion, Baidu pocketed RMB 1.9 billion Yuan in the 2nd quarter of 2010, an increase of 74.4% over the same period last year. Market data also shows that there are 254 thousands active online advertisers using Baidu advertising platform in the 2nd quarter.

The promising financial report from Baidu has made Google envied. After the Chinese government approved Google’s ICP license on July this year, Google has restarted a big recruitment campaign by posting its recruitment advertisings on portal websites such as Sina,51job and etc. Maybe the International search giant will re-enter China market in the near future?

Baidu.com is the largest Chinese search engine. It has a market share of around 65% in the Mainland China. Unlike Google Adwords, Baidu’s PPC program is called as Baidu Bidding Rank(Baidu Jingjia Paiming). Baidu Bidding Ranking is the most popular search engine marketing program that people use in the Chinse community.
1. How does Baidu Bidding Rank work?
Baidu PPC program is operated as following: The higher the customer bids on the price, the better rank of its website in Baidu’s search result pages (you know, google displays Adwords advertising to the right of its search result pages).
2. How to advertise on Baidu – Marketing Network, Procedures, Fees, Contacts.
Headquartered in Haidian District, Beijing China, Baidu sells its search engine marketing services through its branch companies and distribution agencies located national wide. Baidu does have a designated International Business Development Department dedicating to serving for international advertisers/buyers.
To start advertising on Baidu, you need to access Baidu.com and creat your own account firstly. Since English Signup Interface for Baidu is still not avaliable, International advertisers who can’t read Chinese may have problems to successfully create their account. Under this case, you may need some people familiar with Chinese language to help. But if you’d like to spend more than RMB 10,000 Yuan for your first session search engine marketing campaign, Baidu would provide VIP services for you. It is said that Baidu VIP services include keyword analysis, Bidding Ranking advertising copywriting, reporting and optimization.
Advertisers need to pay RMB 600 (around USD 88) Yuan to create an account in Baidu and then deposit RMB 5,000 (around USD 735) Yuan in your account to start using Baidu Bidding Rank. Fees mentioned above are not refundable.
3. Contact Baidu:
Telephone: +86.10.8262.1188 ext: 5876/5852
Fax: +86.10.8260.7007
Email: Contact me and i will tell you.

Eugene Kaspersky (Евгений Валентинович Касперский), founder and CEO of Kaspersky Lab, disclosed that the number of Kaspersky anti-virus software users in Mainland China has exceeded 100 million by the end of year 2008 during an interview by Netease reporter.
When he was asked that which aspect(s) impressed him mostly during his 4th visit to the Mainland China, Eugene Kaspersky said that the city infrastructures in Beijing were improved significantly after the Great Olympics Games, so did with Beijing taxi drivers’ manners. As for Internet security sector, Eugene Kaspersky remarked that he was very proud for the achievement his company has made in Mainland China as the number of Kaspersky anti-virus software users here has even exceeded 100 million. Eugene Kaspersky rated China as a very complicated and very interesting market. “Even though it’s very hard for new players to enter China market, we still get succeed here.” He noted his co-workers in Europe and American countries even could not believe the big success Kaspersky Lab has made in mainland China market.
Eugene Kaspersky said he didn’t care that much for the existing of Kaspersky fake versions. He further explained it by saying the low income level is an important reason that why Chinese users choose fake versions. When fake version users are distracting the legal copy users, we will just block fake version users’ Kaspersky key!”
Eugene Kaspersky also predicated that Kaspersky anti-virus software will lead the market in Mainland China in the next few years.
As world’s biggest Internet market, China has 298 million Internet users and the number is still growing in an amazing speed which creates great opportunities for all kinds of Internet security and anti-virus solution providers. Besides local players including Rising, Jiangmin and Kingsoft Duba, foreign anti-virus companies such as Kaspersky, Symantec and etc have also joined the competition in this promising market.

Even though Chinese video sharing websites are still in their childhood in terms of market share, they have also contributed a lot to Chinese social development by changing the way people watching television in millions of China’s urban families.
Higher income and advanced Internet infrastructure in urban areas makes these families possible to explore the crazy Internet world by installing ADSL connections to their families.

In the past, people in these families have to wait to watch their interested television dramas in a fixed time everyday. They also suffered by random advertisings. While with inceptions of hundreds of “Youtube” websites, they found a way to avoid these disturbings. Today, they can even watch their interested TV drama as long as they want through some Chinese video sharing website without any interruption.
Unlike US Youtube.com, Chinese video sharing websites have completely different content structure. In a word, film and television stuffs dominate Chinese video share websites, with a share of around 70%; while UGC – user generated content, only takes a share of less than 30%. Comparing to UGC-driven Youtube, that’s really a big difference.

Analyst attributed the difference to China’s special environment for television drama industry: “ In US, the television materials are tightly held by its four television stations including CBS, ABC, NBC and etc, these television stations would not like to sell television drama copyrights to video sharing websites like Youtube. While in China, we have 198 television station with more than 2000 television channels as well as thousand of film and television production companies. Television materials in China are highly scattered, which provides a chance for Chinese video sharing websites to change the rule of television drama industry”.
With the forming of a large Internet television drama database, more and more Chinese young students, white collars are shifting to watch television dramas online. Chinese video sharing websites also see a great chance to boost their business. Some of them have started to expand by strengthening partnerships, copyright issue and later stage development.
Main local video sharing players in China are www.joy.cn, www.youku.com, www.tudou.com and etc.

China-based third party online payment processor Alipay Zhifubao announced that its user number has reached 200 million by yesterday June 6, 2009. This made it overtake Papyal as world’s largest electronic payment gateway. Latest statistical data shows Paypal owns approximate 180 million users globally.
Zhifubao, a branch of Alibaba Group, debutted on Taobao.com in October 2003. It took Zhifubao 5 years to get the first 100 million users in the end of August 2008. The period shorted to 10 months to enlarge its user number from 100 million to 200 million.
Shao Xiaofeng, CEO of Alipay Zhifubao says even though the actual turnover value of Zhifubao is lower than that of Paypal for now, Zhifubao is expected to overtake Paypal in this regard in 3 years. Zhifubao uses RMB as its official settlement currency as its users are mainly from the Mainland China; While Paypal, with a global user coverage, uses U.S. Dollar as its official settlement currency. The large currency exchange rate between U.S. Dollar and Chinese Yuan weakens Zhifubao’s competition advantage over Paypal in terms of turnover value.
